- Common names for Nephthytis is Arrowhead Plant, Elephant Ear Plant, Butterfly Plant and Goosefoot Plant. They are popular houseplants and need to be kept away from any pets, as they are poisonous. Wear gloves to prevent the Nephthytis sap from irritating your skin, if you have sensitive skin. They are popular for their arrow-shaped, variegated leaves, these perennial plants are native to tropical America and are commonly grown as indoor houseplants. Slow growing and climbing, Nephthytis plants will last a long time in a container. In fact, Arrowhead Plants are extremely hardy and can even survive mistreatment.
- Plant Care:
- Pot Size: 8"
- Light: Nephthytis is an easy plant to care for and grow as long as it is placed in a bright light situation. It will tolerate lower light levels, but be aware that it will become thin, weak and leggy in low light. Direct, hot sunlight can scorch the leaves of the plant or fade the variegation, so a north-facing window is best.
- Water: Water the plant until the soil is damp. Wait until the top of the soil is dry before watering it again. The plant begins to droop when water is needed but will perk up when hydrated. Over-watering will lead to root rot, which can kill the Nephthytis.
- Soil: Provide loose, loamy soil rich in organic matter for your arrowhead plant. Commercial potting soil works well. Choose a mixture that contains peat moss or perlite to aid in drainage.
